Julia

Ik ben Amerikaanse van geboorte, maar woon al dertig jaar in Nederland. Mijn eerste altviool kreeg ik in handen op de basisschool, en daarmee een reiskaartje dat mij niet alleen de muziekwereld maar ook de buitenwereld invoerde. Zoals mijn altviool docent Nathan Gordon zei, toen hij hoorde dat mijn vader mij liever hielp met een auto kopen dan een betere altviool: Darling, with a car you cannot get a viola. With a viola you CAN get a car. (De auto liet ik achterwege, maar heel mijn leven is de altviool mijn reiskaartje, entreekaartje en creditkaartje geweest.)

In New York behaalde ik onder begeleiding van mijn grootse mentor Francis Tursi mijn diploma Bachelor of Arts aan het Eastman Conservatorium, en ging gelijk op pad voor mijn eerste baan, aanvoerder altviool in het Orquesta Sinfonica de Las Palmas. Van daar naar Londen, waar ik met collega’s een geodesische Dome bouwde om kamermuziek in te spelen. In 1981 kwam ik in Nederland om altviool les te volgen bij de inspirerende Nobuko Imai.

Ik voltooide mijn studie altviool met een diploma Uitvoerende Musicus aan het Utrechts Conservatorium, waar ik ook les gaf aan vooropleidings- en eerstejaarsleerlingen. Hoewel ik het liefst kamermuziek in kleine bezetting speel, was ik in de jaren tachtig, negentig en begin 2000 vaste remplacent bij het Koninklijke Concertgebouworkest, het Radio Philharmonisch Orkest, en het Nederlands Kamerorkest. Momenteel speel ik met het Kamerorkest in de opera bak van het Muziektheater, voor de productie The Rake’s Progress.

In 2002 richtte ik me de culturele organisatie Facetten van de kunst op, waarmee ik projecten en performances samen met kunstenaars en schrijvers maak. Facetten is mijn speeltuin, het geeft mij als artistiek leider de kans om nieuwe kunstuitingen te vormen met collega’s uit andere disciplines. Ik werk dan zowel creatief als praktisch en uitvoerend, om een project te ontwerpen, financieren en mogelijk maken, en uiteindelijk in performance, veelal op een ongewone locatie

I was born in Detroit, Michigan, and have spent more than half of my life in Europe. I got my first viola at primary school, and with it a ticket not only to the world of music but to the world outside of my birthplace. My second teacher was Nathan Gordon, principal violist of the Detroit Symphony, and he taught met what a viola could sound like–rich, dark, beautiful, AND virtuosic.  He was also immensely practical. When my father offered to help me buy a car instead of a better viola, Mr. Gordon responded: Darling, with a car you cannot get a viola, but with a viola, you CAN get a car. Well, he was right. I never bought the car, but everything else in my life is there because of the viola.

I followed my musical education to the Eastman School of Music, doing a Bachelor of Arts with concentration in Music under the tutelage of Francis Tursi, who taught me to look at music from the inside, as a composer would, and to create my own personal sound. With my degree in hand, I left the States for my first job as leader of the violas in the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra. My path took me to London, where I built a geodesic Dome with like-minded musicians, to attract a different audience for chamber music. From there I went to the Netherlands, to study with the inspiring Nobuko Imai, and here I stayed.

I taught pre-conservatory and first-year students at the Utrechts Conservatory, played in many orchestras in the Amsterdam area (Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Radio Philharmonic, and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, among others), and my favorite form of music-making, chamber music. String quintet, sextet, trio, piano quartet, duo…the most beautiful repertoire available.

In 2002 I founded Facetten van de kunst (Facets of the arts) to explore working with artists from other disciplines. Facetten is my playground, where I can co-create new forms with other artists, connecting artists and audience, and all of us to the world around us. The projects are local and intimate, and different every time. As artistic director I play a lot of roles, including producer and organizer, and even promoter, as well as performer and designer/initiator.

Viola

Mijn altviool: gemaakt in 1978 door David Burgess in Michigan, waar ik vandaan kom. Mijn reispartner en muzikale gereedschap voor meer dan 30 jaren. Hij heeft geklonken bij de douane in Mexico, op verzoek in Starbucks Amsterdam Centraal, in de dames wc-ruimte in Detroit Metro Airport, voor het Van Gogh museum, en in theaters van Las Palmas Gran Canaria tot het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

My viola, made in 1978 by David Burgess, is from Michigan, just like me. My travel companion and working partner for more than 30 years. It has been heard in many unlikely places: the ladies’ lavatory in Detroit Airport, at customs in Mexico (played upon by the customs inspector, to show that he could), in Starbucks in Amsterdam Central Station (on request), in front of the Van Gogh Museum back in the day when I had no work, and most recently in Zwolle under the statue of the Green Angel on the marketplace. And in theaters from Las Palmas to the Royal Concertgebouw.

Ervaringen

  • 1981-2018, veel gevraagd als freelance altvioliste in de professionele orkesten in en om Amsterdam. Eerste remplaçant bij het Concertgebouworkest en het Nederlands Kamerorkest van 1985-2000. Eerste remplaçant bij het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, 2006-2010. Recentste optredens, september 2018 met het Nederlands Kamerorkest in de opera Die Zauberflöte en de gala concerten voor de afscheid van Pierre Audi, Stopera, Amsterdam.
  • 1981-2018, kamermuziek in bezettingen van strijkduo’s, trio’s, kwartet, kwintet en gemengde bezetting. Eerste altviool in het Demian Kwintet.
  • 2002-2018, oprichter, artistiek leider en altvioliste van Facetten van de kunst. Recentste optreden: zondag 14 oktober 2018, Oosterkerk met strijkkwartet en slagwerk, vocalist Han Buhrs, sopraan Caroline Stam en bariton Matthijs Mesdag.
  • 2015-2018, componiste. Laatste uitvoering, zondag 14 oktober 2018, liederen cycus The Flowering Branch, Old Heart’s Wisdom, Suite Joyce Moves in Lust met danser Virag Dezso, slagwerker Yung-Tuan Ku, vocalist Han Buhrs en zelf op de altviool.
  • 1987, solo altviool in Sinfonia Concertante van Mozart (Jan Paul Tavernier, viool) 6 optredens met het Frysk Orkest.
  • Docent altviool aan het Utrechts Conservatorium van 1984-1987. Docent (alt)viool en orkest bij FluXus Centrum voor de Kunsten 2009-heden.
